Improve Your Long Term Memory

Having the ability to retain information and retrieve or recall retained information is referred to as memory. The brain plays a very big role in the entire functioning of the human body, and one of which is the process of learning, retaining, and remembering information. Just like the muscles in our body that needs to be exercises regularly for it to function well, the brain also needs to be exercised regularly to prevent deterioration and help in improving the memory. There are many factors that can contribute to a better memory, some of which are a balance diet and getting enough hours of sleep. The brain is one complicated organ in the body, which scientists all over the world are still studying on how the entire brain works, however, there are proven ways on how to improve one’s long term memory.

Seniors are at high risks for developing memory problems, and worse, seniors can develop Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Even though it is normally part of the aging process wherein there will be changes in seniors’ brain functions, specifically their memory, both short term memory and long term memory. Seniors need to do various activities that can improve short term memory and improve long term memory for seniors not to suffer from memory problems and even Alzheimer’s disease and/or dementia.

Tips in Improving Long Term Memory

  • Positive Reinforcement – Telling yourself that your memory is excellent or even good can help in improving your ability to retain and recall information. Having positive attitude towards self will not only improve the memory, it can also improve one’s outlook in life.
  • Organization of Information – Organizing information according to categories can help one to remember things better and for longer period of time. Categorize information according to how you see it easiest to retain and remember things.
  • Association – associating what you already know to what you remember can really help in retaining information. The association technique can help in stimulating one’s memory in times when certain information will be needed.
  • Repetition – Exposing yourself to a certain information several times can make it easier for that certain information to be retained and remembered for a long period of time. If you want to remember the name of a person you have just met, trying to mention the name at least three times during the conversation can make it easier for you to remember the name next time.
